As you indicate, there is quite a difference between a crooked party and a crooked party with support by the US military. I am acquainted with the kind of textbook you mention. They indoctrinate rather than inform. I would recommend DiLorenzo's book to anyone who wants more specific information about Reconstruction. NGPM, thanks for your comment. I remember a university-level American History textbook that attempted to vindicate the Reconstruction. The best defence they could muster was that (and I quote almost verbatim): "Democratic machines in the North probably stole more money than the Republican regimes in the South." As if there was any comparison.
